the artist
Astrid Chesney’s paintings are intimate reflections of mood and memory, layered with the quiet lyricism of her emotional world. Working in an abstract, expressive style, she explores the themes of love, hope, and joy through colour and gesture. Each piece feels like a meditation on connection and renewal, where the personal and universal merge. A long-time resident of Walthamstow, Astrid’s art carries the pulse of the place – Its warmth, community, and creative energy. Her works in this exhibition channel that vibrancy, capturing fleeting moments of joy and the beauty of life in motion.
the story
In ‘Patch Face’, Astrid draws inspiration from the people and characters she’s met around Walthamstow – each carrying their own story. Every patch of colour symbolises a facet of identity - where we come from, the communities that shape us, and the histories we hold. Influenced by folklore and the expressive faces found on ancient objects, Astrid’s work merges myth and modern life. Her painted mask becomes a map of belonging – a reminder that we are all made of many colours, stitched gently in place.
