about the artist
Sarah Emily Porter is an award-winning British artist whose practice explores colour, composition, and process. Working from her Leyton studio, she creates abstract works using gravity-led mechanisms that remove the artist’s hand, allowing materials to flow and settle naturally. Her pieces respond to the textures and histories of place, layering paint to echo the physical and emotional fabric of urban and natural environments. Through her innovative approach, Sarah Emily invites viewers to witness the quiet choreography between control, chance, and the forces of nature.
the story
The Grid Collages draw on Sarah’s interest in artists such as Piet Mondrian and Agnes Martin, bringing together fragments of poured paint on paper originally created while masking earlier works like ‘The Allotment’ and ‘Autumn’. These remnants - once incidental by-products of the painting process - are reassembled through collage into orderly grid compositions that echo the patterns of the urban landscape - intersecting streets, allotments and city blocks seen from above.
Where Sarah’s paintings are carefully planned and structured in advance, these collages lean into intuition and play. Pieces are arranged and rearranged by hand, allowing spontaneity to guide the final composition while still retaining a quiet sense of order and balance. The result sits between chaos and control, transforming leftover fragments into thoughtful, structured works in their own right.
