the artist

sarah is a local hackney based artist inspired by her walks around the hackney and walthamstow marshes. her paintings document paths taken and colours emerging over the changing seasons. balancing fine painterly detail with loose gestural mark-making, sarah enjoys exaggerating her colour palette and infusing her source images with vibrancy and energy - bringing a fresh approach to contemporary landscape painting.

the story

for this new series of original works, sarah draws upon the inspiration of lucy jones’ ‘losing eden’ – a book about why our minds and bodies need nature and the wild. lucy talks about her healing walks around walthamstow marshes, and sarah followed this example – wandering around the marshes and wetlands. she was struck by the transcendent nature of these spaces. when gazing over the marshes, or through a sunlit thicket, you can imagine the scene hasn’t changed much in centuries. only the faint lines of the apartment blocks along the river lee remind you that you are in the present – that there is constant change at the fringes of this natural landscape.

sarah veers closer towards abstraction in this painting – capturing light and detail loosely and intuitively. based on a spot at the walthamstow marshes, we feel immersed in a vivid, grassy green. hints of lilac and yellow joyfully peep through, combining with the gestural marks to take on a life of their own.
