artist's bio

latvian born, elina ruka received her mfa in photography at columbia college chicago. her photographic work centres upon examining the human relationship to the natural world, specifically water. through wide ranging material investigation she creates images that both reflect her own issues as well as evoke an emotional response on the part of the viewer. with her work, she is trying to understand what water is and also show water within a larger context of meaning - not through simply depicting the reality but by transforming the substance to becoming a carrier for a concept of polarities: still/moving, representational/abstract, knowledge/illusion, comfort/fear.

her work has been exhibited in latvia, belgium, denmark, france and the united states and numerous online exhibitions.
