about the artist

johanna is a walthamstow based artist who explores contemporary portraiture and the female gaze. her large scale original works are created by pouring layers of diluted oil paint on a flat canvas in a series of translucent and fluid layers, rarely using a paintbrush. In this way the process is spontaneous and unpredictable - holding tension between the controlled and the uncontrolled, representation and abstraction.

the story

here johanna takes us back to the 1950s in chingford when the larkswood lido was at its very peak – said to be the largest lido in the uk and the busiest. with a huge cross-shaped pool, diving boards and grassy plains for sunbathing – this haven near the city became one of the most sought-after leisure destinations in london. johanna’s take feels like a dreamscape – with 2 proudly posing women as the stars of the show. it captures a moment of surreal, candy-coloured delight and whimsy as we imagine the stories played out on the periphery of these waters.
