the artist
Sarah is a local Hackney based artist inspired by her walks around the Hackney and Walthamstow Marshes. Her paintings document paths taken and colours emerging over the changing seasons. Balancing fine painterly detail with loose gestural mark-making, Sarah enjoys exaggerating her colour palette and infusing her source images with vibrancy and energy - bringing a fresh approach to contemporary landscape painting.
the story
‘Love NHS’ is a painting of a piece of graffiti spotted at the entrance to the Middlesex Filter Beds, by the canal in Clapton. During the pandemic, Sarah visited this nature reserve almost daily and began to notice pro-NHS graffiti appearing around the area. It would vanish and then reappear, often in slightly different forms, suggesting it meant a great deal to whoever was creating it. Sarah was drawn to the message and wanted to paint it - not just because she appreciated the sentiment, but also because it served as a reminder that even in the stillness of landscape, the world leaves its mark. She found herself wondering who was behind the graffiti: who cared enough to keep coming back, painting and repainting their message of support? The mystery of the anonymous artist became part of the work’s story.
