about the artist

johanna is a London based artist who explores contemporary portraiture and the female gaze. her large scale original works are created by pouring layers of diluted oil paint on a flat canvas in a series of translucent and fluid layers, rarely using a paintbrush. In this way the process is spontaneous and unpredictable - holding tension between the controlled and the uncontrolled, representation and abstraction.

the story

an east london institution is resurrected in this artwork. the beloved and heritage-listed façade of manze’s pie and mash shop on walthamstow high street is beautiful depicted and embellished – the traditional sign work which adorns the front shimmering with 24ct gold leaf detailing. aubergine toned brick work and deep emerald green detailing bring this familiar spot to life. through the windows, a warm, cosy and thriving business is suggested – and we think back to the stories held within.

this is a limited edition of 100 print of the iconic manzes in walthamstow. the print has been hand-embellished with 24ct gold leaf. it is available in 2 sizes, 24 x30 cm and 30 x 40 cm. in size 30 x 40 cm, it can be purchased unframed or framed in a bespoke oak wood frame, measuring 34 x 44 cm.
