the artist
Sarah is a Hackney based artist inspired by her walks around the Hackney and Walthamstow Marshes. Her paintings document paths taken and colours emerging over the changing seasons. Balancing fine painterly detail with loose gestural mark-making, Sarah enjoys exaggerating her colour palette and infusing her source images with vibrancy and energy - bringing a fresh approach to contemporary landscape painting.
the story
This painting is part of Sarah’s series exploring Coppermill Lane, with its alternating rows of green and purple trees that signal the changing seasons. Here, she introduces a man-made element – the cycle lane marking – as a way to anchor the scene in the present. Painted on a vivid viridian green ground, the colours take on a rich intensity. The cycling symbol adds a graphic layer to the organic forms, hinting at the everyday use of this route and how nature and infrastructure interact. It’s a glimpse into Walthamstow as both place and passage.
