the artist
Eva Ray Studio is the creative space of Laura Brown, a fine artist based in Whitstable who channels her love of pattern and colour into dream-like, gentle and distinctive pastel artworks. Highly inspired by her time living and studying jewellery design in India, Laura’s work sings of the aesthetics of spaces like Jaipur and Kerala, whilst also drawing on her coastal surroundings in Kent.
the sound
Laura says: “Each new artwork begins with on-site sketches, which I later develop in my studio. For ‘Spring Azaleas,’ I was captivated by the vibrant colours on display at Chartwell House in Kent earlier this year – hues of red, green and orange weaving together in a beautiful composition.
At the start of a piece, I usually play upbeat, energetic music to carry the momentum. As the work becomes more meditative, I shift toward something calmer. Recently, I’ve been returning to Ben Howard’s albums—there’s a quiet introspection and atmospheric quality in ‘Every Kingdom’ that I feel has subtly influenced this piece.”
