the artist
Jonathan Lawes studied at Leeds Arts University, UK, and graduated with a Ba(Hons) in Printed Textiles and Surface Pattern Design in 2009.
After spending the best part of a decade in Berlin, Jonathan has recently relocated to Peckham, south east London. He divides his time between working as an artist and designing for a variety of interior clients.
Jonathan creates prints with a distinctly graphic edge, reflecting his love of geometry, shape, and pattern. Working in a loose, organic way, abstract compositions are formed and ultimately develop as his printing process evolves. He has a keen eye for colour and layering techniques, masking some areas off while revealing flashes of intense colour in others.
the sound
Jonathan says: "I have chosen the sound track 'Humans' by Night Tapes to accompany this piece. In this work I have combined print, collage, paint and oil crayon, to create a layered piece that is experimental in approach. For me, music is a kind of companion; the quiet presence in my solitary studio shapes the mood of what I am creating."
