For local Walthamstow artist Helen Chambers, each painting is a journey of discovery. As she layers paint upon the surface she is continually responding to the ever-changing palette, marks and textures before her. The natural world is her anchor and she employs an expressive, intuitive approach to mark making – taking the finished works outside the boundaries of realism. Her landscapes sit in that intriguing space between abstraction and representation – vibrant and immersive.

the story

“You Rock Me” forms part of Helen’s ongoing series of paintings written as visual letters to her younger self. At the centre of the series sits a simple reassurance - even when life feels uncertain and creativity seems to drift out of reach, something steady lies ahead.

This painting turns toward growth and self-love - the gradual process of moving forward while allowing the past to settle into its place. Layered brushstrokes overlap and shift across the surface, suggesting change, learning and a steady sense of becoming, while softer tones meet deeper colours to hold reflection and momentum in balance. It speaks to the quiet strength of looking back without being held there - recognising what has shaped you, letting it rest behind, and moving forward with a clearer sense of self.
