the artist
Sarah is a local Hackney based artist inspired by her walks around the Hackney and Walthamstow Marshes. Her paintings document paths taken and colours emerging over the changing seasons. Balancing fine painterly detail with loose gestural mark-making, Sarah enjoys exaggerating her colour palette and infusing her source images with vibrancy and energy - bringing a fresh approach to contemporary landscape painting.
the story
In “Ash with Fruit in October” Sarah turns her attention to a small seasonal detail spotted in Waterworks Meadow near Hackney Marshes - the pale yellow fruits hanging from an ash tree. What began as curiosity about those unusual pods became an opportunity to experiment with paint, texture and colour.
Working with a newly treated set of pastel oil paints from Charvin in Paris, she built the composition through soft, muted tones, then set them against a vivid green to give the leaves a sharper presence. Palette-knife marks - a first within her process - add texture and movement across the surface. The painting becomes both a study of an October ash and a quiet record of experimentation, where observation and material discovery meet.
