Light plays a powerful role in shaping the emotional layers of our newest artist Rita Matos' work. In her work she explores the notions of accumulation and disappearance with light guiding her - illuminating the subtleties of colour, texture, and form that transform with each layer.

the story

‘Waking Up To Snow’ is part of Rita’s series Love Letters - a body of work where each painting becomes an individual ode to the small, fleeting moments she longs for. In Portuguese, there is a word for this feeling - saudade - a quiet ache for something you may not fully have, yet instinctively know would bring a gentle lift.

This time, the longing reveals itself in the stillness of a winter morning. A sudden brightness at the window, the softened quiet outside, and that crisp, metallic scent in the air that signals snow has fallen overnight. There is a childlike excitement in that first look — the sense that the world has been quietly transformed while you slept. The painting holds that fleeting surge of wonder before footprints disturb the calm.
