Light plays a powerful role in shaping the emotional layers of our newest artist Rita Matos' work. In her work she explores the notions of accumulation and disappearance with light guiding her - illuminating the subtleties of colour, texture, and form that transform with each layer.

the story

‘Whispers Between the Trees; is part of Rita’s series Love Letters - a body of work where each painting becomes an individual ode to the small, fleeting moments she longs for. In Portuguese, there is a word for this feeling - saudade - a quiet ache for something you may not fully have, yet instinctively know would bring a gentle lift.

Here, that longing is carried through sound. The soft rattling of leaves, the steady murmur of wind moving through branches - a rhythm that soothes and steadies. Standing beneath the trees, you begin to wonder what they are saying to one another, their conversation unfolding in rustle and hush. The painting holds that simple, calming act of listening.

This is an original mixed media painting on raw canvas, framed beautifully in a white-washed solid wood frame measuring 59 x 70 cm.
