the artist
Sarah is a local Hackney based artist inspired by her walks around the Hackney and Walthamstow Marshes. Her paintings document paths taken and colours emerging over the changing seasons. Balancing fine painterly detail with loose gestural mark-making, Sarah enjoys exaggerating her colour palette and infusing her source images with vibrancy and energy - bringing a fresh approach to contemporary landscape painting.
the story
With ‘Berry Thicket’, Sarah celebrates the humble bramble plant - commonly known as the blackberry bush. Often dismissed as a thorny nuisance, the bramble is, in fact, a lifeline for wildlife, especially in densely urbanised areas like London. Its tangled thickets provide safe nesting ground for birds such as wrens and blackbirds, while its delicate blossoms offer rich nectar to bees and butterflies. Come late summer, its berries become vital nourishment for foxes.
The painting is earthy and expressive, with deep, tangled tones and flickers of light. Sarah captures the raw beauty of the bramble - its dark, protective thickets and the quiet abundance they offer. There’s a sense of hidden life and quiet resilience woven into every brushstroke.
