the artist
Sarah is a local Hackney based artist inspired by her walks around the Hackney and Walthamstow Marshes. Her paintings document paths taken and colours emerging over the changing seasons. Balancing fine painterly detail with loose gestural mark-making, Sarah enjoys exaggerating her colour palette and infusing her source images with vibrancy and energy - bringing a fresh approach to contemporary landscape painting.
the story
‘Bramble Thicket’ Sarah celebrates the beauty of unmanaged nature, casting the humble bramble as an unlikely hero - tangled, thorny, resilient, yet undeniably beautiful.
Often dismissed as a nuisance, the bramble is, in fact, a lifeline for wildlife, especially in densely urbanised areas like London. Its tangled thickets provide safe nesting ground for birds such as wrens and blackbirds, while its delicate blossoms offer rich nectar to bees and butterflies. Come late summer, its berries become vital nourishment for foxes.
Through her use of layered greens and earthy tones, Sarah elevates this often-overlooked plant, softening its thorny presence while honouring its quiet significance in the urban ecosystem.
