the artist
Sarah is a local Hackney based artist inspired by her walks around the Hackney and Walthamstow Marshes. Her paintings document paths taken and colours emerging over the changing seasons. Balancing fine painterly detail with loose gestural mark-making, Sarah enjoys exaggerating her colour palette and infusing her source images with vibrancy and energy - bringing a fresh approach to contemporary landscape painting.
the story
Painted in midwinter, this evocative scene from Hackney Marshes captures the stark beauty and quiet magic of the familiar local landscape in its coldest season. Using subtle iridescent accents, Sarah conveys the delicate shimmer of frost clinging to branches and undergrowth - a fleeting light that seems to hover between stillness and movement.
The painting invites the viewer into that familiar winter feeling of being momentarily lost in the woods, surrounded by silence and shadow. And yet, despite the chill, there’s warmth here too: a quiet glow that offers comfort and wonder.
