about the artist

Sarah Emily Porter is an award-winning British artist whose practice explores colour, composition, and process. Working from her Leyton studio, she creates abstract works using gravity-led mechanisms that remove the artist’s hand, allowing materials to flow and settle naturally. Her pieces respond to the textures and histories of place, layering paint to echo the physical and emotional fabric of urban and natural environments. Through her innovative approach, Sarah Emily invites viewers to witness the quiet choreography between control, chance, and the forces of nature.

the story

‘Killer Sudoku – Grasslands’ draws its colour palette from Waltham Forest’s green spaces – Hollow Ponds, Epping Forest, the Olympic Park, and Wanstead Flats – while its composition is inspired by the Sudoku puzzles Sarah completes on her commute to the studio. Her practice uses mathematics as a foundation for structure and order, set against the spontaneity created by her distinctive painting technique. This balance mirrors Waltham Forest itself – a place where the rhythm of the urban environment meets the chance and freedom of the natural world.
