the artist
Emma Phillips is a contemporary landscape painter and curator based in Walthamstow. Her practice explores the psychology of space and the narratives embedded within the land – from personal stories to mythological and ecological histories. Through painterly gestures and colour, she seeks to retell these layered stories, finding harmony between observation and imagination. A graduate of UAL Wimbledon College of Art, Emma continues to build a dialogue between place and perception, using painting as a way to listen to the landscape and trace its living memory.
the story
Based on a photograph Emma took of the neon-wrapped palm trees in the garden of her favourite pub The Nags Head, ’Under Blue Lights’ captures the easy joy of long evenings with friends – laughing, drinking, and playing cards beneath a wash of electric glow. The work hums with memory and atmosphere, transforming the familiar into something dreamlike.
