the artist
Sarah is a Hackney based artist inspired by her walks around the Hackney and Walthamstow Marshes. Her paintings document paths taken and colours emerging over the changing seasons. Balancing fine painterly detail with loose gestural mark-making, Sarah enjoys exaggerating her colour palette and infusing her source images with vibrancy and energy - bringing a fresh approach to contemporary landscape painting.
the story
Sarah was inspired by a single tree on Coppermill Lane, on the Walthamstow Marshes, that seemed to capture all the seasons at once – Its leaves shifting through a full spectrum of colour. To reflect that, she began this painting with a bright pink ground, a bold base that allowed her to push the palette beyond realism. She exaggerated the hues and let flashes of the pink underpainting show through, bringing warmth and energy to the scene. For Sarah, it’s a reflection of how even a familiar path can surprise you with a fleeting burst of colour.
