the artist
Millicent Evans is a Walthamstow-based painter whose practice fuses observation with painterly invention. Trained in Fine Art at Aberystwyth University, she creates compositions where the ordinary meets the eccentric, exploring the tension between human influence and the natural world. Drawing sits at the core of her process, guiding her exploration of form, pattern, and humour. Her works are playful yet deeply considered, transforming everyday scenes into rich visual dialogues that question how we inhabit and interpret the spaces around us.
the story
Millicent’s ‘Ultramarine Sunset’ was created on site in Epping Forest, as part of an ongoing project exploring the importance of these ancient woodlands. Spending time walking through the areas where Epping Forest meets Waltham Forest, she sketched directly in colour pencil and charcoal, allowing each mark to respond to the landscape. To encourage spontaneity, she rotated the page as she worked, layering lines and patterns that evolved into symbolic forms. Deep blues - cobalts and ultramarines - anchored the drawing, capturing both place and atmosphere in shifting light.
