the artist
Sarah is a contemporary painter based in Brighton. Preferring to feel a part of the landscape, Sarah paints, draws, and sketches ‘en plein air’. She loves to be immersed in nature and connected to the environment around her.
Nurturing her relationship with a space by revisiting it in all seasons, she is then able to experience and observe the changes in light, colour, and sound. Her evocative, dreamlike paintings capture not just a sense of light and place, but her own experience within the space. They have an underlying emotional intensity and sense of nostalgia, as if these are places and skies which are familiar to us all.
the sound
Sarah says: “For me birdsong is inseparable from my practice - a gentle soundtrack as I sketch en plein air along the coast and across the Sussex Downs, where skylarks rise and sing each day. Back in the studio, it’s Vaughan Williams I often turns to - especially ‘The Lark Ascending’ - a piece that helps me stay grounded while my paintings find their shape.
In poetry, eventide evokes more than just the transition from day to night - it suggests a settling of light, a hush of calm, and a quiet invitation to reflect. With this painting, I tried to hold that feeling through a darker colour palette and a more dispersed cloud formation. One day may be drawing to a close, but another waits just beyond the horizon, ready to unfold.”
