about the artist
For local Walthamstow artist Helen Chambers, each painting is a journey of discovery. As she layers paint upon the surface she is continually responding to the ever-changing palette, marks and textures before her. The natural world is her anchor and she employs an expressive, intuitive approach to mark making – taking the finished works outside the boundaries of realism. Her landscapes sit in that intriguing space between abstraction and representation – vibrant and immersive.
the sound
Helen says: “‘Late March’ was painted from memory, inspired by early spring walks in Essex - those first days when you can feel the season turning, and the air carries a gentle warmth. The colours and light were soft and dreamy, just on the edge of bloom.
The sonic twin to this moody piece is ‘Soon to be April’ by Tindersticks - one of my all-time favourite bands. The title alone echoes the mood of the piece, but more than that, the song captures the same hazy warmth and quiet anticipation I felt in that moment.”
