about the artist

For local Walthamstow artist Helen Chambers, each painting is a journey of discovery. As she layers paint upon the surface she is continually responding to the ever-changing palette, marks and textures before her. The natural world is her anchor and she employs an expressive, intuitive approach to mark making – taking the finished works outside the boundaries of realism. Her landscapes sit in that intriguing space between abstraction and representation – vibrant and immersive.

Helen says: “‘Terracotta Creek’ was painted from memory, inspired by sunset walks along the water earlier this year - that moment in the day when the light begins to fade but still plays beautifully across the landscape in flashes of shadow and warmth.

The sonic twin to this moody piece is ‘Trees Fall’ by Tindersticks - one of my all-time favourite bands. I’ve always loved their ability to create mood and slow-burning drama, with rich arrangements and sweeping strings that echo the atmosphere I’ve tried to capture in this painting.”

This is an original acrylic painting on canvas, framed in a black wood tray frame. The framed piece measures 83 x 104 cm and is sold ready to hang.
