the artist
Victoria gets much of her inspiration from the surrounding countryside in Dorset and the coast of Cornwall. Whether it’s waking up on the windswept, wild coastline or walking the dog along a winding, overgrown path, she is constantly catching up with nature’s changes.
When she embarks on a painting, Victoria draws upon the emotions of the day — the energy, temperature, time of day, and the bustle of wildlife and birdsong. Using a process-led approach and constantly manipulating the paint, she works intuitively until a composition, colour, or mark emerges and sparks a moment of excitement. Welcoming mistakes, she feels most invigorated when a painting takes an unexpected turn — becoming more compelling through the element of the unknown.
the sound
Victoria says: “I collect a lot of my inspiration from walking, taking photos on my film camera, doing sketches or recording colours. My circular paintings are colour experiments for larger landscapes collecting the colours off the piece to reuse on another. They are as important in the process as a bigger landscape.
While I’ve been to ‘Mupe Bay’ on a number of occasions, Portico Quartet’s ‘Prickly Bear’ always brings me back to one particular trip that’s stayed vividly in my memory."
