the artist

johanna is a london based artist who explores contemporary portraiture and the female gaze. her large scale original works are created by pouring layers of diluted oil paint on a flat canvas in a series of translucent and fluid layers, rarely using a paintbrush. In this way the process is spontaneous and unpredictable - holding tension between the controlled and the uncontrolled, representation and abstraction.

the story

this artwork is inspired by leonard cohen and his extraordinary life and talent as a musician, poet, song-writer and fascinating, curious, contemplative human. the title is based on the famous lyric ‘there is a crack in everything, that’s how the light gets in’ from ‘anthem’, and this is also referenced in the piece with the gold leaf detailing showing a delicate crack in the background. this detail in the artwork also gently refers to the japanese practice of kintsugi where broken items are repaired with gold - making the imperfection a feature of the piece.

the artwork

this is a limited edition of 30 print based on an original ink and water-colour painting. each edition is hand-embellished with 24 ct gold leaf on heavyweight canson rag paper. this print is framed in a slim line aluminium frame with an oak veneer and measures 31 x 41 cm framed.
