the artist

Sarah is a local Hackney based artist inspired by her walks around the Hackney and Walthamstow Marshes. Her paintings document paths taken and colours emerging over the changing seasons. Balancing fine painterly detail with loose gestural mark-making, Sarah enjoys exaggerating her colour palette and infusing her source images with vibrancy and energy - bringing a fresh approach to contemporary landscape painting.

the story

In River Sketch (Lea), a palette of deep blues and rich greens flows across the canvas, conjuring the tranquil depths of the River Lea. Carefully placed lightened-sections mimic the glint of glassy reflections on the water’s surface, capturing a sense of light in motion. The scene features a bridge that leads from the Hackney Marshes to the Olympic Park. Through Sarah's clever use of perspective and subtle shifts in tone, the composition gently guides the viewer’s eye upstream, inviting quiet contemplation of the river’s path and presence. Through restraint and suggestion, Sarah Barrett distills the essence of place with graceful simplicity.
