about the artist

For local Walthamstow artist Helen Chambers, each painting is a journey of discovery. As she layers paint upon the surface she is continually responding to the ever-changing palette, marks and textures before her. The natural world is her anchor and she employs an expressive, intuitive approach to mark making – taking the finished works outside the boundaries of realism. Her landscapes sit in that intriguing space between abstraction and representation – vibrant and immersive.

In ‘Calm Beyond the City’, Helen captures the quiet expanses of Walthamstow’s marshes and wetlands — places alive with birdsong and wild growth yet touched by deep stillness. Here, the city can be seen but not heard, its edges softened by distance and light. Helen’s brushwork traces that fragile boundary where nature and urban life meet, revealing a world both vibrant and hushed.
