about the artist
Johanna Melvin is an abstract painter whose work investigates the geometry and rhythm of the urban environment. Based in Waltham Forest for many years, she draws inspiration from the architecture, grids, and spatial patterns that shape city life. Her paintings balance structure and spontaneity – precise planar forms offset by expressive, gestural marks that suggest movement and emotion. Colour acts as a vessel for memory and atmosphere, evoking the interplay between the built world and the human experience of place.
the story
In ‘Twofold’, Johanna explores the delicate balance between opacity and transparency – how one reveals and conceals the other. The title also nods to Walthamstow’s twinning with Sainte-Mandé in France, a connection she only recently discovered. This idea of two places, two worlds, resonates throughout the work – mirrored forms, layered tones, and shifting planes of light. ‘Twofold’ becomes a quiet meditation on contrast and connection – on how boundaries blur and different worlds can meet in perfect equilibrium.
