about the artist
Tom Stallard is an East London painter whose practice, rooted in decades of exploration, centres on the enduring symbolism of trees. Graduating from Cumbria College of Art and Design in 2001, he has created both conceptual and painterly works that reflect humanity’s bond with nature. His current paintings combine his early abstraction with renewed attention to texture, light, and colour. Through poetic titles and layered surfaces, Tom invites viewers into contemplative spaces that celebrate growth, resilience, and time’s quiet passage.
the story
Tom often cycles past Woo Lot on Lea Bridge Road, where a lone ginkgo tree stands beside the corner shop like a quiet guardian. At night, Woo Lot’s neon signs glow green, lighting up the street with the surreal energy so familiar in Walthamstow – the same acid hues found at God’s Own Junkyard or in the flicker of Ravenswood’s food stalls and microbreweries. By day, the shop feels almost like an American diner, the ginkgo holding its post like a palm tree – a bright, unexpected glimpse of “elsewhere” on the way home.
