the artist
Bristol based printmaker, Anna Harley’s eye-catching landscape prints have a stark freshness and graphic beauty. Her influences are varied and reflect her nomadic childhood, an arts and craft background and connections to places like Scandinavia and Japan. Each print-making journey is one of discovery, and she enjoys letting the process lead the artwork – embracing happy accidents and unexpected results along the way.
the sound
Anna says: “I learnt the ‘First Light Song’ while on a forest bathing experience with my choir earlier this year. We listened with our eyes closed, creating a sound map of the natural world around us, and took time to fully absorb the sights, smells and sensations of the forest. This experience was a reminder of how forest bathing can reduce stress hormones like cortisol, while also improving mood, focus, and creativity.
For me, the walk and the song we learned – ‘First Light Song’ by Penny Stone - captured the essence of the winter season and undoubtedly influenced this print. The song’s words echoed in my mind, a gentle promise of warmth and light in the depths of winter: “May the stars shine brightly on you in the dark night, may the warmth of friends sustain you ‘til the first light. When the dawn will come, bring the warmth of the sun, and the songbirds will be singing in the morning. May the bright stars, in the dark sky, watch over your longest night.””
