the sound
Anna says: “The title of this artwork, ‘The Singing Ringing Tree’, is inspired by a 1957 East German film of the same name, based on a Bavarian folktale. In the story, a magical tree produces beautiful, melodic sounds - but only when it is truly cared for. More than just music, these sounds symbolise transformation, redemption, and the close bond between humans and nature. The tree becomes a catalyst for change, revealing how our connection with the natural world can inspire healing and personal growth.
At the heart of this piece is a tulip tree, often referred to in Native American traditions as the ‘tree of peace’. Sacred and symbolic, it was used not only for practical purposes - like crafting canoes and ceremonial items - but also for its deep spiritual resonance. Its bark, roots, and leaves have long been valued for their healing properties, used in traditional remedies to treat a range of ailments. In this artwork, the tulip tree takes on a similar mythical quality as the one in the folktale - a living symbol of renewal, harmony, and the quiet power of nature to guide transformation.”
