the artist

Bristol based printmaker, Anna Harley’s eye-catching landscape prints have a stark freshness and graphic beauty. Her influences are varied and reflect her nomadic childhood, an arts and craft background and connections to places like Scandinavia and Japan. Each print-making journey is one of discovery, and she enjoys letting the process lead the artwork – embracing happy accidents and unexpected results along the way.

the sound

Anna says: “I have been playing the piano since I was 8 years old and inherited a baby grand from my father a decade ago. Playing Beethoven’s ‘Moonlight Sonata’ on the piano has always felt like stepping into a quiet, intimate dialogue between darkness and light. The melancholic opening movement, with its gentle arpeggios and haunting pace, seems to hold time still - echoing longing, reflection and quiet strength. It’s this emotional depth that inspired my visual interpretation in the form of the print titled moonlight.

In this artwork, I sought to capture the sonata’s moody atmosphere and layered emotion, translating sound into visual rhythm. Textures mimic the soft resonance of piano keys, while the shades of silvery blue and copper of the print evoke the moonlit stillness suggested by the piece. Lines and patterns in the print follow the phrasing of the music - gentle, rising and falling - mirroring the sonata’s sense of the suspended motion.

In this piece I am attempting to bring together two passions: music and visual art. Each informs the other. Just as Beethoven conveyed powerful emotion through sound, I aim to express the same through form and tone in my screenprints.”
