the artist

Bristol based printmaker, Anna Harley’s eye-catching landscape prints have a stark freshness and graphic beauty. Her influences are varied and reflect her nomadic childhood, an arts and craft background and connections to places like Scandinavia and Japan. Each print-making journey is one of discovery, and she enjoys letting the process lead the artwork – embracing happy accidents and unexpected results along the way.

the sound

Anna says: “‘Moon Shadow’ takes its title from the Cat Stevens song, drawing a quiet connection between sound and image. The print shows a long row of trees grown into a thick hedge; their reflections stretched across a flat field beneath a large, low moon. The composition is pared back - still, but not static - where the moonlight flattens depth and draws attention to shape, contrast, and shadow.

In the song, Stevens reflects on loss and change with a gentle, almost curious acceptance, and that tone resonated with me. The idea that even in shadow - literal or metaphorical - something can still be seen or understood connects deeply with how light functions in the image. The trees and their mirrored forms speak to duality, but also to continuity. The moon doesn’t dominate the scene; it simply exists - quiet and grounding. The title links the song and image, but the relationship is open-ended. It’s less about fixed meaning and more about a feeling - an ordinary landscape subtly transformed by light, shadow, and the quiet strangeness of night.”
