about the artist
Matt’s work explores mis-remembered memories of places he’s visited - not through literal representation, but by capturing the emotion of being there. Though abstract, his “memory scapes” often spark personal recollections in those who view them.
His latest collection is his most personal yet. Originally inspired by Greek myths, it evolved into something deeper following the birth of his son, Atlas, and his subsequent heart surgery. Each print became a landscape of the heart - a visual story whispered by the crib, filled with dreams, imagined adventures, and the quiet strength of a father’s love.
the sound
Matt says: “The quirky refrain from Battles’ ‘Atlas’- “People won't be people when they hear this sound, that's been glowing in the dark at the edge of town’ - became my quiet response to my son Atlas’ tears during the early days of his heart surgery journey. I would sing that looping melody back to him as a promise, telling him of all the 'silly walks' we would one day take through the very landscapes I was creating in my mind for him.”
